Steps to Avoid Malware

Malware is just as a real threat to individuals as it is to financial institutions or any organization with sensitive data. Short for “malicious software,” malware spreads through home computers and other electronic devices like wild fire. Stealing passwords and personal information and hijacking browsers is typical of most malware. But the most common malware in the wild is online banking malware which attempts to steal your login information or money directly from your account.

Here are just a few steps everyday users can take to prevent malware from entering and wreaking havoc on their computer systems:

  • Vigilance is a necessary requirement for preventing malware. Keeping constantly aware of tricks scammers and identity thieves use on a regular basis is the first defense. Emails and software are just some of the weapons criminals use in their malware arsenals.
  • Security updates need to be the latest and greatest. Browsers and operating systems offer automatic updates for security, and as soon as critical and security patches are released, they should be applied.
  • Don’t follow links in emails and pop-ups. Even if they look 100% legitimate, scammers know too well how to create realistic messages and links used to capture your information. Instead of using links to websites, type the URL address into the browser.
  • Avoid opening attachments. Unless you know the email sender, avoid opening them at all. It’s often a direct route for cyber criminals looking to install malware. Even if you do know the sender, verify the legitimacy of the attachment before opening it.
  • Use pop-up blockers. They help keep annoying and dangerous pop-ups to a minimum. Never follow links in pop-ups, don’t blindly click “yes” or “install,” and close them immediately. Don’t let pop-up fatigue get the best of you.

Spread the word. Internet thieves count on everyday users being poorly informed. Bring what you learn to friends and family members. It’s a great way for others who wouldn’t otherwise be aware of their vulnerabilities to learn about malware threats. Remember, education and awareness are some of the first steps to stop malware before it starts!
