Landry’s Incorporated has about 500 restaurants around the country. Now, they also have released more information about a data breach that was originally discovered in December. Those using payment cards between May of 2014 and December of 2015 are at risk of having their card number used for fraudulent purposes. Because the breach happen so long ago, your credit card information may have already been sold many times.
It’s important to always keep a close eye on payment card charges and to check statements soon after they are released, regardless of whether or not your card information was included in a
breach. If anything looks suspicious, contact the card issuer to get it resolved.
In addition, anyone using online access to financial accounts should change passwords regularly. Typically it is recommended that this be done every quarter at a minimum. Passwords should always be at least six characters, include upper and lower case letters, a couple of numbers, and a couple of special characters. They should never include identifying information such as birth dates, social security numbers or dictionary words.
Landry’s initially discovered the possibility of a breach in December and immediately started investigating. There is a complete list of restaurants affected on the landryinc.com website along with the dates the unauthorized activity began. In addition, some of the locations were closed before the investigators were able to complete their analysis, so they list those as a precaution.
It was determined that malware had been installed on payment card processing machines at some locations. The exact information that was accessed was not disclosed.
