Evony Gamers' Data Found Leaked; 33 Million Users Should Change Passwords

Back in the summer, Evony gaming was the victim of a massive data breach. It was reported that nearly 33.5 million registered user accounts were included in this incident. Shortly after, the company’s forum was attacked and over 930,000 registered accounts were accessed and information stolen. Now, LeakedSource has reported that this data was discovered and included user names, email addresses, encrypted, but easily cracked passwords, and the IP addresses of 33 million of Evony’s gamers.

This is not the first time, nor is it likely to be last time gamers are targeted in data breaches. After all, a lot of information about the gamers is kept on game servers and can be valuable to identity thieves and fraudsters. In fact, gamers are being targeted more and more often. Minecraft gamers, Pokémon players, as well as anyone using an Xbox or PlayStation have all been victims recently.

Users should change passwords for the Evony accounts now. In fact, because it seems to be a hot target, it’s a good plan to change it every quarter for the time being.

Use strong passwords for online accounts and use a unique one for each account you use. This means make it at least eight characters that includes upper and lower case letters, a number, a special character, and isn’t a dictionary word, name, or include personal information about you or someone in your family. This most certainly means do not use “12345” as your password for anything.

The number one password that was found used on Evony’s site was “12345.” This is very bad and unfortunately is in line with the list of most used passwords some company interested in this topic publishes every year. Salted Hash found in the first few months of this year that some version of “123456789” held four of the top five spots.

In addition, when you are given the option to log in to another online account with a social media account such as Facebook or Google, just don’t. Create a separate account. If someone gets ahold of your credentials for a gaming site, for instance, they also have your social media credentials. That doesn’t normally turn out well. If you did use those for your Evony login, change those passwords too.

Evony is known for the game Evony: Age II. It claims that 18 million players in 167 countries play it. It is unclear if the company has ever or is planning to alert its registered users of the breaches or disclosure of their data.
